Fifteen-Day Dashain Festival In Nepal

October 20, 2012: today is the sixth day of the 15-day Dashian festival in Nepal. In South Asia, Bengalis and Nepalis celebrate the Dashain festival. This festival also is popularly known as the Durga Puja. In Bengal, they make large clay idols of Goddess Durga for revering the goddess and celebrating the festival. Then, at the end of the festival, they take the idols to a river and let them go in such a river. They don’t make any animal sacrifice to the goddess.
However, in Nepal, they make animal and bird sacrifices of every kind to Goddess Durga Bhavani on the eight and the ninth day of the festival. A large number of water male buffalos, male goats, chicken and ducks: all male are sacrificed to the goddess. Sheep and castrated goats are slaughtered for meat to eat during the festival.
The state-owned company called Nepal Food Corporation buys and sells a large number of sheep and castrated goats to Nepalis during this festival. It imports sheep from Tibet and castrated goods from India.
According to the local newspapers, the price of live-castrated goats has gone up to Rs 350 per kg due to the short supply of goats and sheep. The cooked rice and goat meat dishes are the most delicious dishes eaten during this festival in Nepal.
Every household starts off saving some money for six months for spending on the festivities during the Dashain festival. Every family members needs to wear brand new apparels during the festival. Thus, every household spends money not only on foods but also on clothing and so on.
