Protest Against Price-rise of Foodstuff

Issue 37, September 13, 2009

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

On September 10, 2009, small political leaders have rallied a large number of people on the streets of main towns in Nepal to protest the government not controlling the high price-rise of the basic need commodities such as foodstuff. Representatives of all of these political parties are in the current coalition government headed by Madhav Nepal. Leaders of Rastriya Prajantra Party have held a street demonstration in Kathmandu protesting the government not controlling the high price-rise of daily requirements.

After Madhav Nepal became the Prime Minster, prices of rice, lintels, vegetables and edible oil and other foodstuff have increased two folds causing the poor people to cut the daily intakes of food. The government has pretended to control the price-rise raiding the storerooms of a few large businesspersons but they have continued the business as usual dictating the prices of the entire foodstuff they control.

From 2006 to 2008, Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala had caused the shortage of petroleum products causing a great trouble to the consumers and hindering the business of the people and curtailing the socio-economic development of the country. Now, it is the turn of Prime Minister Madhav Nepal to make the foodstuff off-limits to the poor.
