Steering Committee made three Decisions

Issue 06, February 10, 2008

By KTM Reporter in Kathmandu

The meeting of the Steering Committee of the Seven-Party Alliance held on Monday, February 04 made three main decisions such as (1) put on hold the election for the Free Student Unions (FSU); (2) suspend the use of one million rupees received by the legislators, (3) shelve the formation of local governments.

In view of the ongoing campaign for the election for a constituent assembly, the Steering Committee thought that it would not be appropriate to hold an election for the FSU, so, decided to recommend the government to postpone it.

The Steering Committee asked the government for stopping the release of one million rupees to each legislator for development activities to be undertaken through the district governments. Political analysts criticized the government for handing out one million rupees to each legislator at the time when every politician is busy in campaigning for the election for a constituent assembly, so, they might misuse the money allocated for development work.

The third major decision the Steering Committee made was not to reconstitute the local governments for not adversely affecting the election for a constituent assembly.
