Festival Of Displaying Vest Encrusted With Jewels In Lalitpur

June 7, 2013: the government has declared a holiday today on the occasion of displaying the vest encrusted with jewels in Lalitpur at the end of the festival of pulling the chariot of Lord Matsyendranath. The home ministry has served the State high-ranking civil, police and military officials a notice to wear all the decorations, and be present at Jawalakhel in Lalitpur at the time of the display of the vest encrusted with jewels. President Dr Ram Baran Yadav is the chief guest in the festival.

 

Living Goddess Kumari of Lalitpur presides over the function of the festival. The chief of the Guthi Sansthan will break up the seal of a container containing the vest, and then displays the vest to Lord Matsyendranath, and then to the public from the four corners of the chariot. After the display, he seals up the container with the vest in the public view.

 

After the display of the vest, President Dr Yadav makes offerings to Living Goddess Kumari, then to Lord Matsyendranath, and finally to Lord Minanath. Then, the president receives the blessing of all the deities from the priests.

 

Thereafter, Lord Matsyendranath rides on a portable shrine carried by devotees on shoulder poles to Bungamati for residing six months. Devotees see off Lord Matsyendranath chanting hymns, and holding smoking scent sticks in their hands.
