Flood Tolls In Nepal

July 11, 2013: due to the heavy rainfalls during the last three days in Eastern Nepal, at least five persons were killed and three others went missing in floods in various places of eastern Nepal yesterday. According to the Eastern Regional Police Office in Biratnagar hundreds of people were displaced in different districts in the east; two persons died and three went missing in different places in Jhapa district, said police, according to the news on ‘gorkhapatraonline.com.’

 

More than dozens of villages were inundated including the district headquarters Inaruwa due to the continuous rainfalls in the past three days in the Sunsari district. The torrential rainfalls inundated several villages such as Sahabgunj, Amduba, Laukahi, Western Kusaha, Madhesa, Chandabela, Simariya, Satairjhora, Chitaha, Jalpapur, Ramnagar Bhutaha, Haripur, Sripur of the Sunsari district, according to the news on ‘gorkhapatraonline.com’. The Keshaliya River displaced 150 families in the ward No. 2 and 8 of the Belganchi VDC and 15 families of Duhabi-1 in the Sunsari district.

 

The vehicular traffic on the East-West highway were shut down for four hours from 9.30 a.m. on Tuesday, July 9, 2013 due to the flood. Three feet high floodwater was flowing on the highway at some places. The vehicular traffic came to a halt on the Pathalaiya-Nijgadh road section of the East West highway after the flood washed away the bridge over the Dudhaura River yesterday morning. Hundreds of travelers have been stranded on the highway due to the incident.

 

Meanwhile, out of total 52 floodgates of the dam built at the Saptakoshi River, 37 gates were opened yesterday to release floodwaters according to the Koshi Barrage Control Room. Water level in the Koshi River has been increasing. A red flag has been up at the bridge after the floodwater level crossed the danger zone. The flood in the river was cutting the embankment in on the Srilanka Island, but there was no risk at present in the eastern areas such as Prakashpur, Madhuwan, Mahendranagar and Chatara, according to Chief District Officer Laxman Thapa.
