Seasonal Migrants From High Mountains to Low Land

Issue 01, January 5, 2013

By KTM Metro Reporter

December 29, 2013: Majority of local youths have left the Sankhuwasabha district for the warmer areas particularly the terai and the valleys for trading the Himalayan herbs and consequently for escaping from the cold weather, too, said Lendup Bhote, according to the RSS news on ‘gorkhapatraonline.com.’

Leaving for the plains or the Tarai is called Kabela in the local Bhote language.  Locals normally arranged foods for children and elderly citizens left behind for three months, and then the male members of the families leave the district for going to trade the herbs with other necessary items. They stay in the tarai for three to four months, sell their medicinal herms and buy clothes, grains and other goods before returning home.

Over 7,000 Bhotes annually leave the Sankhuwasabha district for trading and earning, and avoiding the cold. Locals (Bhotes) are worried with unexpected change in the weather. Many of them have already left the district to avoid the cold. Thick fog, slight rain and cold wave have worsened the life in the district these days.

Owing to the growing cold, elderly and children have been confined within their homes while protecting their cattle in the shed in the Sankhuwasabha district, according to the RSS news on ‘gorkhapatraonline.com.’
