August 27, 2013: three companies such as Track and Traders, Nepal Wildlife Adventure PVT Limited and Himalayan Safari PVT Limited have been licensed for hunting wild animals at the Dhorpatan Hunting Reserve Area: the only hunting reserve area in Nepal, according to the news on ‘gorkhapatraonline.com’.

Department of National Park and Wildlife Reserve has been allowing hunters to hunt blue sheep and jharals in two phases: first phase from the last week of Ashad (June/July) to Mangshir (Nov/Dec) and second phase from Chaitra (March/April) to Baisakh (April/May).

In the first phase, the Department of National Park and Wildlife Reserve has allowed foreign hunters for a game of hunting 13 Naur (blue sheep) and six Jharel. Companies have been licensed for bringing hunters only for the first phase. The hunters are allowed to hunt at Sundaha, Sheng, Gustung, Faguney and Barsey blocks of the district.

Foreign hunters will be from America, Denmark, Europe, Hungary, Russia, Spain, and other countries around the world, according to the department office in Dhorpatan.

Conservation Officer Bishwo Babu Shrestha has said that the Department of National Park and Wildlife Reserve has been collecting Rs.160, 000 revenue from the hunters for killing one blue sheep or jharal.

In the last fiscal year, a total of 16 blue sheep and seven jharal were hunted. The total revenue collected by the department from the hunters had exceeded Rs. 7,300,000.

The locals have complained that the department has collected huge revenue but the locals have not benefited from it even though a provision is made for spending 50 percent of the revenue on the local development.

Rukum, Myagdi and Baglung Districts share the Dhorpatan Hunting Reserve Area in the Western Nepal.
