Rescuing Everest Trekkers Stranded At Lukla

November 5, 2011: Speaking at a press conference held in Kathmandu to inform about the rescue of the stranded tourists, former President of Himalayan Rescue Association Bikram Neupane has said that Prime Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattrai himself has directed the Ministry of Defense to rescue the tourists stranded at Lukla due to the bad weather as soon as possible, ‘The Rising Nepal’ of today writes.

Helicopters could not fly to Lukla due to zero visibility in the region. However, four seated helicopters have started flying to Surke of Solukhumbhu, a nearest helipad from Lukla to pick up the stranded trekkers in the Everest region.

A private sector team also has started flying the MI 17 helicopter Nepal Army to pick up the stranded trekkers at Lukla.

Himalayan Rescue Association (HRA), Nepal Mountaineering Association, Trekking Agencies’ Association of Nepal (TAAN) and Nepal Tourism Board have requested Nepal Army for using its helicopters to pick up the stranded tourists at Lukla.

If the Nepal Army makes the MI 17 helicopters available, TAAN will foot the bills, treasurer of TAAN Kumar Thapa has said according to the news posted on ‘The Rising Nepal’ of today.

Mr. Thapa also has said that food and accommodation for the tourists have been a problem at Lukla and Surke due to the number of tourists adding each day.

More than two thousand trekkers in the Everest Region have been stranded at Lukla due to the continuing bad whether in the area for the fifth successive day, the government and private sector have started to bring the tourists stranded at Lukla to Kathmandu.
