Maoists Fire Back Government’s Accusation Of Peace Accord Breach

Issue 50, December 13, 2009

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

On December 9, 2009, the cabinet meeting has decided to accuse the UCPN-Maoist of breaching Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA), inform the UNMIN and international communities and urge them to monitor the Maoists’ activities. The government obviously wants to use the incident of the Kailai police killing of landless people as the evidence of the Maoists breaching the peace accord.

At the same time, speaking at the opening function of the Far Western Festival in Dhangadhi, Chairman of UCPN-Maoist Prachanda has said that not the security people but the current government is accountable for the incident in the Kailali district for killing of innocent people. He has also asked the government to declare the people killed in the Kailai district martyrs and pay compensation to the families of the victims, and pay for the treatment of the injured. He has also said that the government instead of resolving the issue of landless people peacefully has fired live ammunition on the unarmed people; and the government has accused the Maoists of breaching the peace accord.

The meeting of the Central Committee members of the UCPN-Maoist has decided to object the decision of the government on accusing the UCPN-Maoist of breaching the peace accord and take up the issue with Prime Minister Madhav Nepal stating it goes against the understanding reached between UCPN-Maoist Chairman Prachanda and Prime Minister Madhav Nepal on resolving the Kailali incident amicably.
