NEFIN Demands Keeping Number Of Proportional Seats Intact

July 16, 2013: talking to a team of the Nepal Federation of Indigenous Nationalities (NEFIN) in Kathmandu yesterday, Chairman of UCPN-Maoist Prachanda has said that his party will support the NEFIN if it launches the streets protests against the decrease in the number of proportional seats that are to be filled by the number of votes received by the political parties in the elections scheduled for November 19, according to the nepalnews.com.
A team of NEFIN has met with Chairman Prachanda, and has submitted a memorandum to him demanding to revoke the decision on reducing the number of proportional seats in the Constituent Assembly. Chairman Prachanda said, “If you hit the streets to exert pressure for the fulfillment of this demand, then we are ready to extend our full support to your cause,” quotes nepalnews.com.
NC and CPN-UML leaders have been nervous about the representation of th ethnic people, marginalized people, and Madheshis in the past Constituent Assembly. So, these NC and CPN-UML leaders forced the Madheshi leaders and CPN-Maoist to agree on reducing the number of seats to be filled by the proportional representation.
