Processing For Amending Constitution Restarted

KTM Metro Reporter

August 17, 2017

Kathmandu: Lawmakers had started off the clause-wise discussions about the Bill on Amendment to the Constitution yesterday obviously for meeting the demands of the Madheshi leaders particularly of the Rastriya Janata Party-Nepal that have been absent from the first two elections to the local units. They have said that no matter what the results of the vote on the bill would be, this time they would participate in the election to be held in the province number two on September 18, 2017.

The previous government of former Prime Minister Prachanda had introduced the bill in the parliament on April 11, 2017 but it remained dormant for most of the time because of the political controversy. Consequently, the RJP-Nepal leaders did not participate in the first two phases of the elections.

The government is to put the bill to a vote on August 21, 2017. The establishment would have hard time to garner two-thirds majority without the support of the opposition CPN-UML and its political satellites. However, it would expose the CPN-UML to being against the Madheshi and ethnic people if the CPN-UML were not to vote for it, as the amendment was for meeting the demands of the Madheshi and ethnic people rather leaders.
