Second Day Shutdown of Government Secretariat

Issue 46, November 15, 2009

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

On November 13, 2009, the cadres of United Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist (UCPN-Maoist) have successfully closed down the government secretariat staging sit-ins at all entry points in Kathmandu the second day and completed the second round of their movement. Most of the central level leaders of the UCPN-Maoist have participated in the sit-ins until 2:00 PM and then held a mass rally at Bhrikuti Mandap.

Speaking at the mass rally, UCPN-Maoist Chairman Prachanda has said that his party will defeat the regressive forces peacefully and will not allow anybody to dissolve the Constitution and will not allow anybody to disrupt the writing of a new constitution. He has also accused the current government of attempting to dislodge the writing of a new constitution and has not been worrying about the passing of the budget in the legislature in order to find a pretext to impose a presidential rule. He has set the deadline of November 20, 2009 for the government to meet the demand of his party, and said that if the government does not meet the demands then, his party will launch a third round of the movement.

Speaking to the same rally, Deputy Chairman of UCPN-Maoist Dr. Baburam Bhattarai has said that his party has demanded only five things such as people’s suzerainty, peace, constitution, correction of unconstitutional act of the President, and national government, as legendary Pandavs had asked for five villages from the king of Hastinapur; if the current government would not give even that five things then his party will fight for total power as did Pandavs for the Hastinapur kingdom.
