EU And US Diplomats for Extending Term of UNOHCHR

Issue 14, April 04, 2010

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

March 31, 2010: the EU and US diplomats have jointly met with Prime Minister Madhav Nepal at his office on March 30, 2010 to discuss the current political and human rights issues relating to Nepal. They have expressed their serious concern for the current political deadlock, for not completing the peace process and for not moving the writing of a new constitution forward.

They have strongly advised the Prime Minister to extend the term of the UN Office of High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNOHCHR) in Nepal. However, the Prime Minister has not been in favor of extending the term of UNOHCHR but strengthening the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) according to the Prime Minister’s foreign affair advisor Rajan Bhattarai.

Most probably the European and America diplomats have advised the Prime Minister to extend the term of UNOHCHR in view of the Nepal Army personnel killing three innocent women including a 12-year old girl at the Bardiya National Park in Western Nepal on March 11, 2010, and the Nepal Army and the Defense Minister labeling those innocent women as poachers for escaping the killers from the killing of innocent people with impunity. Most probably Madhav Nepal is also for protecting the human rights abusers not extending the term of UNOHCHR.
