Parliamentary Monitoring Committee Formed

Issue 27, July 03, 2011

By KTM Metro Reporter

June 28, 2011: The Legislature Parliament has yesterday formed a 17-member parliamentary monitoring committee to monitor the five-point deal leaders of UCPN-Maoist, NC and CPM-UML reached on the night of May 28, 2011 to extend the term of the Constituent Assembly (CA) for three months to complete the peace process and the constitution writing, ‘The Rising Nepal’ and ‘Gorkhapatra’ of today write.

Such a high-level committee was supposed to form within a few days after the deal was signed and endorsed by the legislature-parliament but it took one full month to form such a committee to oversee the enforcement of the deal.

Chairman of the CA was supposed to set up a high-level committee but Chairman Subash Newang could not show his ability to do so. Chairman Newang leads the committee but how far the committee and he could oversee the implementation of the five-point deal remains to be seen. Mr. Newang wants to please everyone particularly the political leaders; that is where his weakness lies causing the considerably delay in completing a new constitution; whether the committee would sped up the peace process and the constitution writing remains to be seen.
