By KTM Metro Reporter

August 1, 2013: as part of the global campaign against the ‘violence against children’ (VAC), UNICEF launched a campaign on combating VAC in Nepal yesterday, according to the news posted on ‘gorkhapatraonline.com.’

Speaking at the event in Kathmandu, UNICEF Representative for Nepal Hana Singer has said that none of the victims of VAC should keep quiet; they must speak out against the violence, and the perpetrators of VAC would be brought to justice.

Commissioner of National Human Rights Commission Gauri Pradhan stressed the need for developing the society with zero tolerance on VAC. Commissioner Pradhan has said that children faces violence not only in the unsafe workplaces but also even in schools, educational institutions and in their own houses.

Commissioner Pradhan said that the number of child labor has declined by one million during the last decade out of 2.6 million child laborers in the country. Other achievements are the early marriage has declined by 50 percent and the cases of physical punishment given to the children also declined by 50-60 percent, Commissioner Pradhan said.

Under Secretary to the Ministry of Children, Women and Social Welfare Dr. Kiran Rupakheti said that the State has formulated many rules and regulations to curb the VAC but the results have been much to be desired.
