Issue 19, May 08, 2011

By KTM Metro Reporter

May 4, 2011: the Nepalese president has called a budget session of the parliament starting on May 02, 2011; however, some lawmakers are not in a mood to let the budget session run smoothly. On the first day of the opening of the budget session, after the Speaker has completed the reading out the letter, the office of the president has sent with the message of opening the budget session, some lawmakers belonging to the ethnic groups moved to the area next to the rostrum, and shouted slogans forcing the Speaker to postpone the session to May 10, 2011.

These lawmakers have been demanding the rights of the disadvantaged communities to be ensured in the new constitution rather than the government bringing the budget without the consent of all the political parties in the parliament.

Prime Minister Jhalanath Khanal has assured the leaders of three major parties UCPN-Maoist, NC and CPN-UML of the government building a consensus on bringing the new budget before submitting a new budget to the parliament.

The so-called opposition party NC leaders have been stubborn not to accept the government submitting the budget setting aside the work on the peace process and the writing of a new constitution.
