CPN-Maoist Urges UN Not To Interfere In Nepalese Affairs

Issue 45, November 10, 2013

By KTM Metro Reporter

November 8, 2013: In a strongly worded statement issued by the party's Vice- chairman CP Gajurel also the head of the party's international bureau yesterday in response to the statement issued by the UN Nepal office on behalf of the international community in Kathmandu concerning the elections to a new CA, CPN-Maoist urged the United Nations not to interfere in the domestic political affairs of Nepal, according to the Xinhua news.

UN Resident Coordinator for Nepal Jamie MCGoldrick on behalf of the international community on Wednesday, November 6, 2013 urged the CPN-Maoist to respect the universal principle of free election and not to engage in any illegal acts such as general strike.

The CPN-Maoist has said that it is a democratic and political right of the people either to boycott or take part in the election. "In the UN statement, boycotting parties have been projected as undemocratic. It is a right of citizens either to boycott or participate in the polls. So the statement itself is undemocratic one," Gajurel said in the statement.

The party also in the statement has said that the UN's statement is a glaring example of increasing foreign interference in Nepal. The CPN-Maoist has announced a 11-day strike ahead of Nov. 19 election to disrupt the election.

In a statement released in Kathmandu on behalf of the international missions in Nepal, UN Resident Coordinator Jamie McGoldrick said that everybody should respect the democratic rights of voting. The international community came up with such appeal ahead of indefinite strike called by CPN-Maoist beginning on November 11. The CPN-Maoist has called strike with a purpose of disrupting the election.

"Closure and shutdown executed by violence and intimidation are against people's political rights and also against Nepal's law," said the statement, "Everybody should respect the democratic right to participate in peaceful, open and inclusive polls."
