Raids at the Storehouses of Hoarder of Food Grain

issue 31, August 2, 2009

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

The local administration has raided the storehouses of the hoarders of food grain in Kathmandu in a bid to release the food grain from holding for mitigating the skyrocketing prices of these items. The hoarders have held these items at their storehouses with the purpose of increasing the market prices of these food items. The local administration has taken the stock of those items hoarded at the storehouses. The market prices of these items have more than doubled.

On July 26, 2009, the food-grain hoarders with the help of the authorities of the Nepal Chambers of Commerce and Industry, and the Federation of Nepal Chambers of Commerce and Industry have knocked the door of the Prime Minister and Minister for Finance for complaining that the local administration has harassed them according to the news published in the state-run newspaper ‘Gorkhapatra’ of July 27, 2009. This is not the first time the authorities of the prestigious associations of businesspersons and industrialists have engaged in covering up the business culprits.

Political Analyst Shyam Shrestha writing in a state-run newspaper ‘Gorkhapatra’ of July 26, 2009 has stated that the food grain dealers will dictate the market prices as long as the major political parties receive the donations from them. So, he has suggested providing the political parties with funding from the state revenue.
