On Sunday, June 15, 2008, Acting Head of State and Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala hoisted a national flag at the Narayanhity palace and opened the Narayanhity Palace Museum amid the function attended by the Constituent Assembly members, members of Council of Ministers, high level State employees and members of diplomatic missions in Nepal. On May 28, 2008, the Constituent Assembly had ordered the Government of Nepal to turn the Narayanhity Palace into a museum.

After opening the museum, Prime Minister Koirala in his brief speech said that his wish was for crafting a constitution that would be the Nepalese creativity rather than borrowed ideals. He also said that he was proud of peacefully making Nepal a republic.

Prime Minister Koirala arrived at the Narayanhity palace at 3:15 P.M. fifteen minutes behind scheduled. He took the army salute immediately after arrival.

Quoting experts’ views Home Minster Krishna Prasad Sitaula said that it would take at least three months before the Narayanhity Palace Museum could be opened to the public. However, some Nepalis wanted immediate opening of the museum to the common people.
