Future of Madhav Nepal In the Balance

Issue 48, November 29, 2009

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

Obviously, Chairman of UCPN-Maoist Prachanda and NC President Girija Prasad Koirala have had the agreement on first removing the President and then the Prime Minister to break the current political deadlock. However, both the spokesmen for Prachanda and Koirala have been denying any such agreement they have reached in Singapore when Prachanda met with Koirala at the hospital where Koirala was undergoing medical checkups. Currently, the Nepalese media have convincingly reported that they have reached such an agreement but Koirala and Prachanda have failed in this agreement, as the NC central committee members have reacted negatively to such as agreement, and have repeated their commitment to continue their support for the current government.

Madhav Nepal is also facing the criticism of his party colleagues. Chairman of his party Jhalanath Khanal has been saying that the current government needs to make sacrifice for ending the current political deadlock; and he is ready to lead a new government if such a need arises.

Another colleague Bamdev Gautam has said that the NC leaders have made Madhav Nepal the Prime Minister for causing split in the communist parties. In other words, Madhav Nepal has been the bone of contention. How long Madhav Nepal will be able to hang on in the position of Prime Minister remains to be seen.
