October 5, 2013: the International Day of Girl Child is marked around the world on Octber 11 but Nepal marked the day a week ahead launching the National Plan of Action (NPA) on Holistic Development of Adolescents in Kathmandu yesterday, according to the Xinhua news.

The reason for marking the event early was the upcoming Dasain Festival, the biggest festival in country that sees seven days of national holiday, said UNICEF, a key partner of the government in launching the event.

The NPA was finalized following the consultations with 2,000 adolescents and 1,000 adult stakeholders from all over the country. Inter-ministerial task team acting under the National Planning Commission (NPC) of Nepal along with several INGOs and NGOs assisted in formulating the NPA.

Vice Chairman of NPC Rabindra Kumar Shakya has said that the NPC is committed to provide full support to create an environment conducive to meet the aspirations of the NPA for the holistic development of adolescents in Nepal.

UNICEF country representative Hanaa Singer has said that adolescents constitute almost 24.19 percent of the 26.49 millions people in Nepal. Therefore, it is necessary to invest in this chunk of people in order to secure a bright future of the country. She also urged international, local communities and the government to step up their effort to educate more girl child. "More girls are in school today, but our effort in education the girls remain unfulfilled," she added.
