Archaeological Excavation in Tilaurakot

February 13, 2012: a team led by Professor Robin Cunningham of Durban University, London jointly with the Lumbini Development Trust (LTD) of the Department of Archeology of the Government of Nepal has started off the archeological excavation at the historical site of Tilaurakot where weapons were believed to be manufactured during the reign of Buddha’s father, ‘The Rising Nepal’ of today writes.

Last year, the Government of Nepal had signed a five-year agreement with the Durban University, London to carry out excavation at the Tilaurakot and its surrounding areas for searching the archeological objects dating back to the Lord Buddha’s time according to the member secretary of this excavation project Bhesh Narayan Darnal,.

The team has started the excavation at Lohasariya area: western part of Tilaurakot Durbar on February 4, and completes it on February 28, Darnal said. The objective of the excavation is to ascertain the truth of manufacturing of weaponry, he said.

Lumbini is the birthplace of Lord Buddha; Kapilbastu is the capital of the kingdom of his father, and Devdaha is the Lord Buddha’s maternal uncle’s home.
