Nepal Government Decided Not To foot Bills Of Colonel Kumar Lama

Issue 38. September 22, 2103

By KTM Metro Reporter

September 19, 2013: while he was visiting his family in Britain about eight months ago, Colonel Kumar Lama of the Nepal Army was arrested in Britain on the charges of war atrocities in Nepal. Colonel Lama was charged with torturing the Maoists during the 10-year civil war.

The irony is that the coalition government of political parties headed by Vice-chairman of UCPN-Maoist Dr Baburam Bhattarai has decided to foot all the bills incurred by Colonel Lama for the legal process. His foreign minister another Vice-chairman of UCPN-Maoist Narayankaji Shrestha has repeatedly requested the British Government to turn over Colonel Lama to the Nepal Government.

The current non-political government headed by the chief justice of the Supreme Court of Nepal has decided not to foot the bills for the legal process Colonel Lama has to follow in Britain, and the government has informed the headquarters of the Nepal Army accordingly, according to the news in ‘gorkhapatra’ of today.
