NC Against State Restructuring Following Ethnicity

Issue 51, December 18, 2011

By KTM Metro Reporter

December 13, 2011: the parliamentary party of NC has held a meeting at one of the Nagarkot resorts yesterday to talk about the structure of Nepalese federation. Most of the NC leaders have expressed their opinions against forming states following the ethnic groups, ‘gorkhapatra’ of today writes.

NC leaders had been even against federalism. They are for a strong central government. However, they have gradually given in their stand on this matter and agreed on federalism. Still some NC leaders want to go back to the unitary system rather than a federal system.

Some responsible NC leaders have said that they would decided the state restructuring after consultations with the members of the NC belonging to different ethnic groups and Madheshis. These NC members also know that if they don’t demand states following the ethnic groups then their respective community would blacklist them.

In this meeting held in Nagarkot, senor leader of NC Sher Bahadur Deuba was not present. He was busy in his home district with campaigning against President Sushil Koiral dissolving the district committees of the sister organizations. Mr. Deuba has been telling his followers in his home district that he had reached a deal with late Girija Prasad Koirala to hold elections to the district committees of the sister organizations of the NC. He has even said that Sushil Koirala had made decisions on dissolving the district committees of the sister organizations without consulting other members of Central Working Committee of the NC.
