Reporters Held Rallies Across Nepal

Issue 25, June 19, 2011

By KTM Metro Reporter

June 16, 2011: reporters across Nepal have held rallies across Nepal yesterday for one hour protesting the assault on reporters elsewhere in Nepal and the government not bringing Parsuram Basnet known for his involvement in assaulting reporter Khilanath Dhakal in Biratnagar recently. Journalists across the country would continue to rally against the perpetrators of violence against reporters.

Reporters in Kathmandu have held one-hour rally at Thapathali Mandala protesting against the government not bringing Parsuram Basnet to justice even though he has been known for his involvement in perpetrating violence against Khilanath Dhakal; and his boss have said through media that Mr. Basnet has been with him, and he would turned him over to the police if the allegation against him comes true.

The police have not been able to arrest him because he is the regional leader of the Youth Force affiliated to the CPN-UML of Prime Minister Jhalanath Khanal. Although Mr. Khanal has said that he has not given protection to the criminals but his Home Minister Krishna Bahadur Mahara has been helpless to bring the culprit to justice. So, he has even gone to the prime minister asking for his assistant in bringing the assailant to justice.

Does such a prime minister that could not maintain the law and order and follow the rule of law has any legitimacy to continue in the office? Certainly no, he needs to quit office immediately.

Nepalese journalists have said that they would continue to hold sit-ins and rallies against the perpetrators of violence against reporters and against the impotent government led by Prime Minister Jhalanath Khanal that could not arrest the criminals and bring them to justice.
