Nepal-Made Rice-Straw Footwear Reaches US Market
By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu
Footwear made of rice straw reaches the US market according to the report of ‘The Rising Nepal’ of March 25, 2008.
Some Nepalese farmers living elsewhere in the Kathmandu Valley use their spare time for weaving footwear from the dried-rice straw. First, they twist the rice straw into ropes; then they weave footwear from the ropes.
Nepalis use the footwear on the special occasions when they cannot use other footwear because of their impurity. The footwear thus woven from the rice-straw ropes are considered to be the most clean ones.
Some Nepalis wear such rice-straw footwear during the winter season at home as these footwear keep the feet warm. Nepalis rarely go out wearing such footwear, as they are not made for walking outside home.
