Controversy Over Army Integration Lingers On

January 4, 2011: the government of officiating Prime Minister Madhav Nepal has written a letter to UNMIN requesting for transferring the Maoists’ weapons and other UN equipment used for monitoring the armies under its control to the government before leaving Nepal after January 15, 2011. In response, the UCPN-Maoist leaders have been preparing for going to the Supreme Court of Nepal against the government’s ploy to disarm the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) without integrating with the Nepal Army. So, Chairman of UCPN-Maoist Prachanda has written a letter to the UN Security Council for extending the term of UNMIN until May 28, 2011: the last date for promulgating a new constitution.

Speaking at a press conference held by the Revolutionary Journalists Association in Dang on Monday, January 3, Chief of Department of Foreign Relations of UCPN-Maoist Krishna Bahadur Mahara has said that the government should send back the UNMIN only after making another UN mechanism for monitoring the peace process otherwise sending the UNMIN back will have a negative effect on the peace process. 

At the same time, speaking at the interaction program in Kathmandu today, leader of UCPN-Maoist CP Gajurel has said that the government needs to integrate the PLA with the Nepal Army before transferring their weapons to the state. The PLA will turn over the weapons only after the completion of the army integration done properly.

Speaking at a function held by the Cancer Relief Society in Bhaktapur today, Chairman of Nepal Workers and Peasants Party (NWPP) Narayan Man Bijukchhe has said that the Indian intervention in the Nepalese politics will increase after the departure of UNMIN from Nepal in the current political situation.
