Elections Impossible In June If No Political Consensus Within A Day

Issue 11, March 17, 2013

By KTM Metro Reporter

March 12, 2013: The Election Commission would not be able to hold the elections by June this year if the political consensus were not to build and all the legal and administrative obstacles to holding elections were not removed within a few days, said spokesman Anilkumar Thakur, according to the ‘gorkhapatra’ news of today.

The spokesman said that according the population census of 2011, Nepal has 15.4 million voters, the Election Commission needed to make voters’ of all the voters, and distribute voters’ cards. Making electronic voters’ list has not been made because of the technical problems.

Then, the printing of votes is another time consumption work. It takes a month to complete the printing of votes. The Election Commission would start the printing only after it is sure to hold elections in June.

Spokesman Thakur also complained that the election bill submitted to the head of state President Dr Ram Baran Yadav has curtailed most of the important power given to the Election Commission. If the president issued an election ordinance following the Bill on Election submitted to the president, the Election Commission would not be able to take actions against the political parties for not following the code of conduct prescribed to the political parties; and the Election Commission wouldn’t be able to take actions against the political parties that involved in rigging the elections; so, the Election Commission has lodged a protest against the Bill on Election submitted to the president for issuing an election ordinance, according to the ‘gorkhapata’ news of today.
