Indian Encroachment On No-man’s Land

Issue 17, April 25, 2010

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

April 23, 2010: the state-run newspaper ‘Gorkhapatra’ of April 23, 2010 has reported that disregarding the international convention on border issues, India has stated off constructing dams on the no-man’s land areas bordering the Nepalese territory in the Mahotari district without even informing the Government of Nepal. The dams will submerge the Nepalese territory and displace Nepalis from the submerged areas but will irrigate the Indian agricultural land.

With the permission of the Central Government, the State Government of Bihar has stared off constructing such dams at several places on the no-man’s land areas causing distress to the Nepalis living in various areas bordering with India. Nepalis will surely suffer from the floods in the coming days of the monsoon period when downpour of rains will be daily events.

So, Nepalis have reported the Nepalese local administration and the Nepalese Armed Border Police Force on the Indian encroachment on the no-man’s land and have demanded to stop such illegal constructions immediately.

The officials of the Nepalese administration and the Nepal Police have requested the Indian counterparts not to construct such dams on the no-man’s land; however, the Indian side has continued to construct dams according to the state-run newspaper ‘Gorkhapatra’ of April 23, 2010.
