Maoists and Government Heading To Showdown

Issue 44, November 1, 2009

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

The Maoists have been preparing for launching their second round of movement for restoring the people’s suzerainty and for correcting the President’s unconstitutional move on directly writing a letter to the Chief of Army Staff abusing the Interim Constitution of Nepal of 2007.

Prime Minister Madhav Nepal has said that his government is prepared to amend the Interim Constitution of Nepal of 2007 for clearly defining the role and responsibility of the ceremonial President if the Maoists stop holding the legislature hostage.

On October 29, 2009, the cabinet has decided to call on the Maoists to talks for removing the political logjam, and to call off their nationwide protest against the President’s unconstitutional move that has put Madhav Nepal on the chair of Prime Minister.

However, the government has failed in addressing the divisive issues such as the President’s unconstitutional move and the people’s suzerainty that the Maoists have demanded the government to address. So, the government and the Maoists are on the way to head-on collision and a showdown of their strength.
