Indefinite Shutdown of Nepal

Issue 18, May 2, 2010

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

April 27, 2010: leaders of the UCPN-Maoist have held a press conference on April 26, 2010 to declare an indefinite shutdown of Nepal starting on May 2, 2010 with the slogan for ‘peace and constitution’ if all political parties in the government don’t follow the consensus politics for ‘peace and constitution’ by May 1, 2010; they are going to celebrate May Day holding rallies across the country.

Chairman of UCPN-Maoist Prachanda read out the decision of his party on holding an indefinite shutdown of Nepal for peace and constitution, as the ruling political parties have been ignoring the completion of the peace process and the writing of a new constitution but tending to remain in power.

Chairman Prachanda has said that the shutdown will be peaceful however if the government attempts to suppress the peaceful shutdown then the cadres will oppose it.

The UCPN-Maoist leaders have trained their cadres and the YCL members on handling batons and defend themselves from the police baton charges. However, the Madhav government has charged the UCPN-Maoist with giving their cadres a military training, which the Maoist leaders have repeatedly denied.

The Madahv government unable to work on the consensus politics has done nothing to complete the peace process and writing of a new constitution but ordering the Nepal Army to be on alert during the shutdown of Nepal prepares for going head-on confrontation with the opposition.
