Issue 19, May 9, 2010

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

May 4, 2010: the Maoist cadres have continued to enforce the third of shutdown of Nepal today. From the early morning, the Maoist cadres are seen on the streets of Kathmandu.

Speaking to the anchor of the Nepalese Avenue TV, the Maoist leader leading the rally at Gongabu in Kathmandu has said that yesterday at the time when the Maoist cadres are preparing to go to their destinations, a motor cycle has appeared at the time of opening the market at about 6:00 PM for two hours, and the Maoist cadres have stopped it and immediately a number of people assembled there and then the Maoist leader managing the rally has brought the situation under control but some infiltrators possibly in cooperation with the police have created a situation leading to the police firing tear gas and blank fires in air.

Speaking at the corner meeting at Sundhara in Kathmandu on May 3, 2010, the second day of the shutdown of the entire country, one of the Vice-chairmen of UCPN-Maoist Dr. Baburam Bhattarai has boasted that the members of the International Community have been amazed by the peaceful protest held by the Maoist cadres.

Dr. Bhattarai has said that the Maoist party has been forced to launch the peaceful protest against the current political situation brought by the NC and CPN-UML leaders’ intention of not writing a new constitution and for completing the peace process; so, the current movement is for ‘peace and constitution’.

Dr. Bhattarai has also said that the Maoist cadres will remain on the streets until they achieve their political goal; they will eat, they will stay and even sleep on the streets as long as necessary; the people’s power is great and the people will never lose the fight.

At the same time, top leaders of three major political parties such as UCPN-Maoist, NC and CPN-UML have continued bilateral and tri-lateral meetings but so far without any success to break the current political deadlock.

The Maoist cadres have opened the market for two hours from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM for enabling the people to buy and sell essential goods. They have also let run ambulances, press reporters’ vehicles, vehicles of diplomatic missions, milk and water tankers and trash collectors’ vehicles for twenty hours a day.
