By KTM Metro Reporter
March 16, 2011: a bench comprising the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Nepal Ram Prasad Shrestha and Justice Khil Raj Regmi has upheld the ruling of the Special Court and convicted former minister and leader of Nepali Congress party Chiranjivi Wagle of stealing the state treasury, Reviewnepal.com reports.
Chiranjivi Wagle needs to serve one-and-a-half-year term of imprisonment and return Rs 40.06 million to the state treasury. This is the victory of the Commission on Investigation into Abuse of Authority (CIAA) over the corrupt ministers and politicians.
Mr. Wagle continues to sit on the Central Working Committee of the Nepali Congress despite he is convicted of such a heinous crime of stealing the state treasury.
The coalition government headed by Jhalanath Khanal needs to enforce the verdict of the Supreme Court of Nepal immediately. However, the past practices have been that the government does not implement even the verdicts of the Supreme Court of Nepal. It remains to be seen whether the current government is smart enough to put Mr. Wagle in jail or not.
