Issue 52, December 27, 2009

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

On December 21, 2009, disregarding the Prime Minister’s order to turn over Major Basnet to the police for producing him to the Kavre Court, the Nepal Army set up a three-member court of inquiry to investigate the case of Major Niranjan Basnet indicted by the Kavre Court for killing a minor Maina Sunar. In addition, the international and national human rights organization have been putting pressure on the Nepal Army to turn over Major Basnet to the civilian court.

The UN has fired Major Niranjan Basnet from the job of the UN Peace-keeping Mission in Chad after finding the Kavre Court has indicted him for murdering a minor Maina Sunar in 2004, and sent him back to Nepal. The Nepal Army has said that Major Basnet is in the custody of the army police. The Nepal Army has been unhappy with the UN for firing Major Basnet.
