Celebrating Haribodhini Ekadashi In Nepal Today

Issue 48, November 25, 2012

By KTM Metro Reporter

November 24, 2012: Hindu Nepalis have celebrated today called Haribodhini Ekadashi: the day of Lord Vishnu waking him up from the four-month hibernation or coming out of the world of Bali Raja the lord had pushed to another world for stopping him from doing any meritorious acts that have challenged the heavenly administrator Indra.

Nepalis sang the songs calling the thousands names of the lord. They visited the shrines and temples to the lord across Nepal, and offered flowers, vermillion, rice and flagrant smoke to the lord.

Thousands of Nepalis visited Buddhanilkantha: another name of the lord at Shivapuri, and at Balaju, and other Narayans at Changu, Ichangu, Bishankhu and so. Narayan is a common name of Lord Vishnu. Narayan means the lord came out of water. Thus, Hindu Nepalis welcomed Lord Vishnu back to the human world from the world of Bali Raja or hibernation.

Hindu Nepalis also held the last rituals to the ‘tulsi’ plant in which Lord Vishnu left his soul for the humans to worship when the lord actually went into hibernation or to the world of Bali Raja depending on the belief Nepalis have. For the four months, Nepalis had worship Lord Vishnu in the ‘tulsi’ plant. Today after holding the final rituals to the plant, they uproot it and dry it, and keep the seeds for next year, and leaves for medicinal purposes.
