Nepal Pride of 2010: Gay Parade In Nepal

August 25, 2010: gays, lesbians, transvestites and their supporters have paraded on the streets of Katmandu, today marking the Nepal Pride of 2010. Hundreds of participants dressed in colorful male and female clothes have danced through the main streets of Katmandu. Nepalese parliamentarian and prominent leader of gay activists in Nepal Sunil Pant has led the annual parade called Nepal Pride held by his Blue Diamond Society of Nepal that has been fighting for the rights of gays and minority groups in Nepal.

Sunil Pant has claimed that supporters of gay rights and participants from India, Japan, Britain, Germany, Denmark and Norway have taken part in the street parade. British Ambassador to Nepal and some of the embassy staffs have also participated in the parade. He has also said that he has received congratulatory message from the US Ambassador to Nepal, British Ambassador to Nepal, and the Irish parliament.

Recently, his organization called Blue Diamond Society has hosted a gay marriage between the British gay and his Indian counterpart and certified the marriage held following the Hindu rites and rituals. The society has charged US$ 200 for hosting and certifying the gay marriage.

The Supreme Court of Nepal has ordered the Government of Nepal to legalize the rights of the third gender people but the government has not formulated any laws concerning the gays in Nepal, yet.
