Indian Mujahideen Top Militant Arrested

August 29, 2013: Indian officials say that the Police in India have arrested Yasin Bhatkal: the head of the Indian Mujahideen (IM) militant group, which has been blamed for a string of recent attacks; the group is thought to be behind deadly blasts in the cities of Pune, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Delhi, according to the BBC NEWS.

 

Mr Bhatkal is a co-founder of the homegrown militant group, and he is one of the most wanted men in the country. Indian police arrested him close to the border with Nepal.

 

The real name of Yasin Bhatkal is Muhammad Ahmad Zarar Siddibapa but he operated in the various names such as Mohammad Zarrar, Ahmed, Imran, Asif and Shahrukh. A native of Bhatkal town near Mangalore in Karnataka, he along with his cousins Riyaz and Iqbal Bhatkal had formed the IM. Both Riyaz and Iqbal are said to hole up in Pakistan, according to the ZEE NEWS.

 

Riyaz Bhatkal played an active role in almost all terror attacks by the IM including the Hyderabad, Banglore and Pune blasts. He was caught on the CCTV camera of the German Bakery in Pune when he personally went there to plant the bomb, according to the ZEE NEWS reports.

 

Indian Mujahideen (IM) mastermind Yasin Bhatkal was arrested from the Indo-Nepal border after being on the run for over five years, Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde confirmed that Bhatkal was held on the Bihar-Nepal border currently in custody of the Bihar police, the Business Standard reports.
