President Ram Baran Yadav Makes Offerings to Goddess Kumari

September 23, 2010: as the head of state, President Ram Baran Yadav has visited the Basantapur area to initiate the festival of pulling the Chariot of Living Goddess Kumari making offerings to the Goddess on September 22, 2010. Vice-president, Officiating Prime Minister, House Speaker and other ministers have also attended the function at Basantapur. The tradition has it that the Head of State needs to make offerings to Goddess Kumar, Lord Ganesh and Batuk Bhairava to start the festival of the pulling of the Chariot of Living Goddess Kumari.

The government has stopped Gyanendra Shah from attending the function held to venerate nine Kumaris at Basantapur stating the security concern. On September 23, 2010, answering to the questions of the reporters in Simra of the Bara district, officiating Prime Minister Madhav Nepal has said that Gyanendra Shah is trying to wield power as a cultural king attending the program on venerating nine former Kumaris at the venue where the President needs to attend the cultural program scheduled to hold following the Indra Jatra festival on September 22, 2010; so, he has stopped Mr. Shah from attending the program. He has also said that Mr. Shah needs to understand that the monarchy is dead, myrepublica.com reports. The officiating Prime Minister has said that the government will stop any program that goes against the republic.
