Elections To Civil Servant Union’s Office Holders

KTM Metro Reporter

Kathmandu, June 3, 2016: Elections to Civil Servant Union’s office holders were held on June 1, 2016. The union affiliated to the CPN-UML won the overwhelmingly number of offices, the NC-affiliated Union got the second position whereas the CPN-Maoist-Center the third position, the Madhesh-party-affiliated union received about seven percent votes thus becoming not eligible to represent officially.

Elected civil servant union’s officials have declared that they will work for correcting any decisions made by the civil servants at the high positions. Speaking to the anchor of the Radio Nepal morning program called ‘antar-sambad’ on June 3, 2016, former chief secretary Lilamani Pokharel said that if the elected officials of the civil Servant Unions were to do so then the civil rule would be in chaos. He also said that all the civil servants together were the perpetual government. He questioned how the union leaders could bargain with their own government. He said that the principles of the trade union were to bargain with the owner of industries so that workers would not be exploited unduly. So, the Civil Servant Union would harm the rule of law.

Prime Minster Girija Prasad Koirala had set up civil servant union for countering the influence of the king at his time. Now, the union has been for countering or supporting one party government or another making the union is more political than anything. Union leaders don’t work at the office but go to attend the party programs and events and draw the salaries from the government while working for the political party. Common folks in general have been for dissolving the Civil Servant Union immediately, as the union leaders have been doing more harm than good to the civil service delivery.
