Second round of removing Statues in Nepal

Issue 47, November 23, 2008

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

On November 16, 2008, addressing the ceremony of laying down the foundation stone for building a statue of Shankhadhar Sakhwa at Tundikhel in Kathmandu, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Home Affairs Bamdev Gautam said that the government would replace all statues of the then-kings with statues of national heroes elsewhere in the country.

In late 1950s, the then-King Mahendra removed the smart statues of Rana Prime Ministers standing at crossroads in Kathmandu, and relocated them at the corners of Tundikhel. However, he did not touch the statue of Judha Shumsher still standing at the north end of New Road in Kathmandu.

Currently, the second round of removing statues has been going on; this time, locals have been removing the insignificant statues of Mahendra, and erecting the statues of other prominent Nepalis in such vacant places.
