Issue 44, October 31, 2010

By KTM Metro Reporter

October 30, 2010: people in American have been preparing for celebrating Halloween of 2010 on the night of October 31, 2010. No matter which day it falls they celebrate it on October 31. Halloween used to be for warding off the evil spirits and witches believing ghosts, goblins and witches become very active on this night. Young children wearing different sorts of scary costumes and masks go from house to house saying ‘treat or trick’. If it is treat you give them candies. Adults also enjoy this festival wearing various funny costumes and holding parties on the night of this day. One of the main features of this festival is carving Halloween pumpkins and making them scary figures. It reminds us the Nepalese festival of Gatha Muga and Yeomari punhi. Gatha Muga is for warding off the evil spirits and the great day for witches; yeomari punhi is for children to go from house to house asking for yeomari: a kind of a candy in Nepal.

Nepalis are preparing for celebrating the five-day festival called Tihar honoring crow, dog, bull, cow, and holding body worship and brother worship on each day of this five-day festival. According to the Committee on ‘Setting Nepal Calendar’, crow and dog honoring is on the same day: November 4, honoring cow is on Nov. 5, honoring bull is on Nov 6 and brother worship is on Nov. 7.

The Nevah community in Nepal celebrates the New Year following the Nepalese calendar called Nepal Samvat on the first day of the bright fortnight in the Nepalese calendar. This day is on November 7 in this year. So, they will perform the body worship on this day and then the next day the brother worship. So, for them the brother worship is on Nov 8.
