Nepalese And Indian Dalits Gathering For A Conference

Issue 11, march 13, 2011

By KTM Metro Reporter

March 12, 2011: Nepalese and Indian dalits are gathering for a two-day conference in Kathmandu today, ‘The Himalayan Times’ reports quoting the state-run news agency RSS. The conference will focus on the rights and liberation of dalits in Nepal and India.

Some dalits in India and Nepal have been living inhumanely even in the 21st century. Some of them have been working one generation after another for paying off the loan taken by someone of them in the past. They are called bonded laborers in India and Nepal.

India even after gaining independence from the foreign rule and having run one of the largest democracies in the world for more than six decades has not been able to liberate its bonded laborers, and has not been able to improve the lives of the majority of dalits in India.
