By KTM Metro Reporter
May 26, 2012: Nepalese political leaders could not build a consensus on the most contested issue of state restructuring even one day before the end of the term of the CA that has to promulgate a new constitution before its term runs out on the midnight of May 27, 2012. On the one hand UCPN-Maoist and UDMF leaders stuck to their stand on the number and names of federal provinces on the other hand NC and CPN-UML also stuck to their stand on not tolerating even a single province under the name of any ethnic group.
International leaders such as Former US President Jimmy Carter and UN General Secretary Ban Ki-moon have been worried about the political deadlock in Nepal, and called on all Nepalese political leaders to build a consensus on a new constitution to avert any political crisis in Nepal.
Civil society groups have been on the streets for putting pressure on the leaders to build a consensus on a new constitution and promulgate it on or before May 27, 2012. Other ethnic groups have been on the streets shutting down vehicular traffic and regular businesses of the people demanding for or against federalism.
At the same time, Chairman of UCPN-Maoist and his deputy Mohan Vaidya Kiran huddled together at the residence of the Chairman for talking about what to do next after the demise of the CA on the midnight of May 27, 2012. More than often they have been at odds on the political and ideological issues.
Talking to the reporters on the premises of the CA today, Standing Committee Member of UCPN-Maoist holding the portfolio of Minister for Finance Barsha Man Pun has said that he is confident in the CA promulgating a constitution on the midnight of May 27, 2012, as the Nepalese political leaders have the habit of doing the most crucial thing at the last moment, ‘The Himalayan Times’ writes today.
