Kathmandu-Hetauda Fast Track Highway In The Offing

Issue 03, January 20, 2013

By KTM Metro Reporter

January 18, 2013: President of Non-Resident Nepalis Association (NRNA) Jiba Lamichhane and Chairman of Nepal Infrastructure Development Company Limited (NIDCL) Kush Kumar Joshi signed off an agreement on the NRN investment in the Kathmandu-Hetauda Fast Track Highway yesterday. After signing off the agreement, Chairman Joshi said that the construction of Kathmandu-Hetauda Fast Track Highway would begin within this month, as the work has been going smoothly and the project would start within this month, according to nepalnews.com.

The project was supposed to be started off in the early 1990s when Girija Prasad Koirala was the prime minister but the project could not take off due to the greed of the prime minister and the concerned minister for pocketing the commissions out of the project. Since then the project had been kept on the shelf.

After Dr. Baburam Bhattarai took over the rein of the government, the Kathmandu-Hetauda Fast Track Highway got a new life. The government and the Federation of Nepal Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI) formed a Nepal Infrastructure Development Company Limited (NIDCL) following the public-private cooperation.

Once the project is completed, the travel distance between Kathmandu and Hetauda would be reduced considerably, and subsequently the travel time. Most of the vehicles travel to south would pass through this fast track. Committers will save lot of time. Transporters will save fuel, wear and tear of engine and tires but they need to pay the toll. NIDCL would make a lot of money collecting tolls from the drivers.
