$200m for Anti-polio Campaign

Issue 48, December 02, 2007

Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and Rotary International provided the World Health Organization (WHO) with a grant of $200m for the global campaign to eradicate polio according to the BBC NEWS of November 26, 2007. Polio immunization programs have dramatically cut the number of new polio cases during the last 20 years; however, it is still endemic in Nigeria, Pakistan, India and Afghanistan. About 360,000 children a year suffered from this disease in the late 1980s; now it has been reduced to just over 700 a year, but attempts to eradicate polio altogether have so far failed.
