Extending Term Of Constituent Assembly

May 13, 2011: after the cabinet made the decision on amending the Article 64 of the Interim Constitution of Nepal of 2007 for extending the term of the Constituent Assembly for one year, Minister for Law and Justice Prabhu Shah, Minister for Education Gangalal Tuladhar and Minister for Health Shakti Bahadur Basnet registered an amendment bill for extending the term of the Constituent Assembly for a year at the parliament secretariat in Singh Durbar, ‘The Rising Nepal’ of today writes. The term of the Constituent Assembly (CA) expires on May 28, 2011.

Talking to the reporters, spokesman for the government and Minister for Education Tuladhar has said that extension of the term of the CA is necessary to accomplish the peace process and crafting of a new constitution.

Minister for Law and Justice Prabhu Shah has said that the provision made in the Interim Constitution does not permit to dissolve the CA without completing the promulgation of a new constitution; so, the need for extending the term of the CA for completing the promulgation of a new constitution.


At the meeting of the political parties representing in the CA, leaders of political parties have demanded the calendar of operations of completing the crafting of a new constitution before discussing the amendment bill for extending the term of the CA. Nepali Congress, Madheshi parties, Nepal Workers and Peasants Party, and Rastriya Janamorcha did not participate in the meeting.
