issue 52, December 28, 2008

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

On Friday, December 19, 2008, speaking at the inaugural session of National Youth Sports Festival in Kathmandu, CPN-UML General Secretary Jhalanath Khanal said that the Nepali Congress (NC) has been attempting to block the crafting of a new sending its students to the streets for obstructing vehicular traffic and creating anarchy in the country. CPN-UML General Secretary Khanal said that the Nepal Students’ Union (NSU) affiliated to the NC taking the issue of the NC to the streets would hinder the peaceful transformation process in the country. He also said that everybody could resort to a peaceful means of putting forward anybody’s demands instead of heralding stones and burning the State-owned vehicles on the streets.

On December 20, 2008, speaking at the interaction program held by the Forum for National Dialogue in Kathmandu, Chairman of Terai Madhesh Democratic Party (TMDP) Mahanta Thakur warned the government of Madheshi people revolting again if their demand for ‘One Madhesh One Pradesh’ were not met. He blamed the Prime Minister for not taking up the TMDP’s demand for talks for a month and the Constituent Assembly-legislature for turning the deaf ear to their demands for enforcing the past agreements.

CPN-Maoist leader CP Gajurel said that crafting a new constitution and integrating the Maoists’ combatants with the Nepali Army have been difficult, as the Nepali Congress has been obstructing the sessions of the Constituent Assembly (CA).

Chairman of Constituent Assembly Subas Nembang said that all the 25 political parties represented in the CA are committed to crafting a new constitution even with their ideological differences; the CA committees’ meetings have been held smoothly despite the obstruction of the CA sessions. He was confident in the political parties ultimately coming to consensus on the constitution-writing process as they did in the past in various political issues.

In an interview with 'Europeko Nepalipatra' (www.nepalipatra.com), a weekly newspaper published from London, Senior Maoist leader and ideologue, Mohan Baidya 'Kiran' said that Nepal would become a 'people's republic' within one and a half years according to Nepalnews.com Dec 20 08. He did not elaborate what meant a ‘people’s republic.’

On Saturday, December 20, 2008, CPN-UML Standing Committee Member Bharat Mohan Adhikari said that the political parties have been heading to confrontation rather than to consensus as the CPN-Maoist and Nepali Congress were heading to political polarization at the time when we needed consensus on political issues. "NC's call for a broader democratic alliance and the Maoist's idea of forging an alliance of republican forces are clear indications that both the parties are in a mood of confrontation," Adhikari said at an interaction program held in Kathmandu according to the THT website.
