By KTM Metro Reporter
September 4, 2013: leaders of the four-party political mechanism have been considering to keep intact the provision made in the Interim Constitution of Nepal of 2007 for the number of Constituent Assembly (CA) members. According to the provision, 240 will be directly elected, and 335 from the proportional representation and 26 to be nominated, according to the news in ‘gorkhapatra’ of today.
The four-party leaders had agreed with the Federal Democratic Front to increase the previously decided 491 to 585 members of a CA to be elected in the coming elections in November but the front led by Ashok Rai has been demanding to keep the previous number of the CA intact. In order to bring on board the Ashok Rai front, the four-party leaders are willing to go back to the previous provision.
NC and CPN-UML have pressed to decrease the number of the CA members saying the 601 members have been discredited. However, the ethnic and underprivileged Nepalis have charged them with reducing the representation of the ethnic people and underprivileged people.
