Priests Holding Back Offerings To Lord Pashupati

Issue 10, March 10, 2013

By KTM Metro Reporter

March 6, 2013: South Indian priests called Bhattas working at the temple to Lord Pashupati in Kathmandu have refused to perform the special puja demanding to get some share of the puja fees the devotees pay for holding special puja means offerings. The prices of such special puja range from Rs. 1,100 to Rs. 1.1 million.

Pashupati Area Development Committee (PADT) collects the fees from the devotees, and then it deposits some amount of the fees in the bank account of PADT, and it uses the rest of the money for buying various puja items following the PADT regulations, according to Gorkhapatraonline.com news of today.

Bhattas have stopped performing the special pujas since February 14, 2013 demanding to pocket certain amounts of the fees from the devotees paid to perform special puja to Lord Pashupati even though Bhattas enjoy high salaries for their services.

In 2009, the government headed by Chairman of UCPN-Maoist Prachanda had attempted to replace those South Indian priests with the Nepalese priests but the anti-national-minded leaders of NC such as Ram Chandra Poudel and Dr. Ram Sharan Mahat forced the government to revoke the decision on replacing the Indian priests with the Nepalese priests, and continue the Indian priests working at the temple to Lord Pashupati in Kathmandu.
