May 21, 2012: Today the second day of a shutdown of Nepal called by the Nepal Federation of Indigenous Nationalities (NEFIN) against the deal reached among the political parties on 11 provinces without names and geographical boundaries has disrupted the regular lives of people and shut down their regular businesses causing immense sufferings to the common folks. Surely, this is not the right way of showing discontent or muscle power.
At the meeting of the government and the representatives of the NEFIN held at the secretariat of the Army Integration Special Committee at Naya Baneshwor, Kathmandu today, leaders of the four major political power centers such as UCPN-Maoist, NC, CPN-UML and UDMF have urged the representatives of the NEFIN to call off the shutdown program and sit for talks to resolve the issue.
"NEFIN's attention has been drawn to the statements of some responsible leaders of the political parties that the meetings of the legislature parliament and the CA could not take place due to the Nepal bandh," a statement issued by President of NEFIN Raj Kumar Lekhi said, "It has become clear in the past four years that the parties are trying to bring out the constitution from their pockets by deliberately trying to protract the process." "NEFIN is ready to make arrangements to assist the 601 CA members to reach the CA for the meetings as well as their return. We would like to appeal to the agitating people to assist for this purpose. Our agitation is meant for ensuring the constitution, not derailing the drafting process" nepalnews.com quotes.
In his statement President Lekh also blamed the members of the anarchic forces infiltrated into the enforcers of the shutdown for all the damage done to lives and properties of the people, and of the reporters, and the police too for not doing anything to protect the lives and properties of the common folks during the shutdown.
Speaking at the Reporters’ Club yesterday, Information and Communications Minister Raj Kishor Yadav said that the country would plunge into a deep crisis if the demands of the ethnics, indigenous and Madhesi people were not addressed; he also voiced solidarity with the NEFIN stating the shutdown called for is right thing to do for establishing the identity of different ethnic groups, ‘The Rising Nepal’ of today writes.
At the same time, Prime Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai today put the security agencies at the full alert to avert any political and social chaos stating the government is fully aware of the conspiracy to disrupt the constitution drafting process by destroying the ethnic harmony and causing chaos.
UCPN-Maoist and UDMF jointly proposed for 10 provinces with single ethnic identity at the meeting of the four party leaders with the view to calm down the ethnic uproar caused by the 11 provinces previously agreed without names and geographical boundaries but the point-blank refusal of NC and CPN-UML leaders for any ´single ethnic identity´ put the proposal in limbo according to myrepublica.com news. "There is no alternative but to go for voting from tomorrow [Tuesday]. But we will continue negotiations to arrive at consensus on the contentious issue”," said Vice Chairman of UCPN-Maoist Narayan Kaji Shrestha after the meeting.
